2D Projection Mapping Workflow

2D projection mapping workflow follows these next steps:

  1. Prepare your project. Place as many virtual projectors as you have physical ones. Include the source of the texture you will be projecting.

  2. Map your texture to the projectors.

  3. Warp & blend the projectors.

Map your content to the projectors

We will be using the Color Grid layer instead of the final texture while setting up the project. The Color Grid layer is great for projection mapping as it makes the process simpler, smoother and more precise.

Good to know: The resolution of the Color Grid image should match the resolution of the texture you will be using in the final project.

For this simple example, we will only be using 2 projectors that have already been mapped to the right video output. In reality, you will use as many projectors as your project requires.

Good to know: The placement of the projectors in the Viewport doesn't really matter in 2D workflow.

Once you create a Color Grid layer and choose the right resolution, place it on a newly created Canvas.

There are a few ways you can map the Canvas to the projectors.

For 2D projection mapping the best way is to open the Canvas Setup window. Here, instead of mapping the whole Canvas to the projectors, you can determine a specific sub-area for each one of your projectors.

Make sure that no content is being cut or cropped by mistake in the process.

The end goal of 2D projection mapping, in most cases, is to have the texture look like a continuous image on the physical flat wall regardless of how many projectors you are using.

The best way to determine where to place the sub-areas is to also look at the actual flat surface your physical projectors are mapping to.

Good to know: It is a good idea to have the sub-areas overlap. This will help you better match the end of one sub-area and the beginning of another on the physical flat surface.

Warp & Blend your projectors

At this point, the transition between the sub-areas on the flat surface is still rough and obvious. In order to make it seamless, use the Warp & Blend feature.

All you have to do now is remove the Color Grid from the Canvas and place the texture you will be using for your final project on it instead.
